Creative Collaboration: Papersynthesis

PAPERSYNTHESIS is a paper floral studio founded by Mabel Low in 2020. The studio mainly designs and crafts floral and foliage from card-stock papers.

Mabel started experimenting for a more durable option by making paper plants back in 2018 after a slew of houseplant casualties. Applying her education (Diploma in Product and Experience Design with Merit / Bachelor of Arts - Industrial Design) into her works, Mabel is able to design, colour, sculpt and construct papers to transform them into stunning art pieces.

A background story on how 'PAPERSYNTHESIS' came about. "My husband came up with the name actually. He got inspired by the word ‘photosynthesis’, the process by which green plants transform light energy into chemical energy. He thought that my plants doesn’t need that process since it is paper. Thus changing the word to papersynthesis. Ever since then he have been demanding a share in my business since he suggested the name", said Mabel.

All papers used are carefully selected based on their unique textures, colours and properties. Each floral type has gone through multiple rounds of prototyping before finalising on the construction method and form.

Cardstock paper floral is not new in Singapore. But many are only familiar with the giant paper flowers. When Mabel started doing regular size paper flowers, there was no one she could learn the skill from. "So i had to use my design background to do many prototypes and invent my own ways to sculpt the 2D paper into the shape i want."

All PAPERSYNTHESIS products are designed and handcrafted in Singapore, available in-store and online now. Mabel will also be conducting her first-ever Animal Crossing Inspired Paper Flowers Workshops (i.e. Paper Mums, Paper Cosmos and Paper Windflowers) here at PaperMarket's Creative Studio, Raffles City B1-27.
